I’m Mario Sevilla and I design audience-centered storytelling and communications strategies across media and public-facing institutions.

Spotlight On Digital

About Me

I’m Mario Sevilla, an editorial and communications leader with more than two decades of experience helping organizations navigate moments that matter: breaking news, institutional milestones, cultural change and digital transformation.

I began my career in San Francisco Bay Area newsrooms, where I learned the enduring value of accuracy, urgency and public trust. Over time, my work expanded into strategy, leadership and systems design — building teams, launching platforms and developing storytelling approaches that serve audiences while advancing organizational missions.

Today, my work sits at the intersection of journalism, strategic communications and technology.

What I Do

I work with organizations to bring together editorial judgment, audience insight and technology in ways that support clear, credible and human-centered communication. My experience spans print, broadcast, digital and higher education, and I’ve led teams, managed cross-functional collaborations and mentored professionals and students alike.

Whether the goal is informing the public, telling an institutional story or navigating complex change, I focus on communication strategies that are sustainable, audience-centered and mission-driven.

How I Think About Storytelling

I view storytelling as a form of service. That belief has guided my work across a wide range of formats — from breaking news and public safety coverage to commencement stories, interactive data projects and cultural exploration.

I’ve used tools such as livestreams, interactive maps, dashboards and AI systems — not for novelty, but to help audiences better understand the world around them. Some of my most meaningful work has involved designing storytelling systems: frameworks that allow information to evolve responsibly over time, particularly in fast-moving or high-stakes situations.

At San Diego State University, for example, I built an AI editor to support newsroom workflows by checking copy against our style guide, grammar, structure and SEO considerations — always as a support tool, never to replace human judgment.

Leadership and Collaboration

I’ve led creative teams in both high-pressure newsroom environments and collaborative institutional settings. My leadership approach is grounded in:

  • Setting clear expectations
  • Fostering psychological safety
  • Using data to inform (not dominate) decisions
  • Respecting both craft and people

I aim to create space for experimentation while maintaining standards, supporting teams and serving audiences.

Recognition and Values

My work has been recognized with multiple awards, reflecting sustained excellence in strategy, execution and collaboration. Recognition is never the goal; it signals alignment between values, process and outcomes.

I’m drawn to roles that prioritize thoughtful leadership, strategic communication and public-facing impact — particularly in strategic communications, higher education, media and related fields. This site is a space to share my work, my thinking and the principles that guide how I lead and build. If you’re interested in where storytelling, strategy and trust intersect, you’re in the right place.
